The Story of Dance
Seong-Jin Cho is well known for his poetic phrasing and structurally intelligent piano-playing. Critics praise his technical brilliance and lyrical narrative. Without a doubt, he is one of the few musicians who not only are masters of their instrument but also have the gift of musical storytelling. The South Korean superstar will be demonstrating this exceptional talent at his PRO MUSICA concert. He has put together a programme that not only spans several centuries from Johann Sebastian Bach to Arnold Schönberg but also follows a dance theme throughout. Stylised Baroque dance forms in Bach’s Partita are echoed in the dances from Schönberg’s Suite for Piano Op.25. Schumann’s Faschingsschwank explores the theme of dance with a Viennese Waltz, and Chopin’s much-loved Grandes Valses Brillantes are said to have caused quite a stir in the salons of 19th-century Paris.
